Becks mania hits Wellington

More than 200 fans were gathered yesterday at Wellington Airport to welcome English football superstar David Beckham and received with a powhiri by the Terau Taiohoue cultural group.

I was not able to go to Wellington Airport yesterday as you know I have to watch my youngest daughter and also to pick up my son from the school.

As I watched the news from tvnz, Beckham made no public statements as he arrived slightly late at about 1.30, but graciously signed several T shirts and posters held out by his most devoted fans in the arrival lounge. Beckham listened attentively during the powhiri and speeches by Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast and Wellington Phoenix football supremo Terry Serepisos.

Today, I went to Copthorne Hotel in Oriental Bay were LA Galaxy are staying just to glimpse David Beckham but failed. Then, by 11AM I go straight to the Westpac Stadium to watch the Galaxy’s two hour open training session with 15,000 school children that are shouting, chanting and creating mexican waves for most of the two hour session.

I was lucky enough to sit in front to glimpse at how top level footballers prepare for a match. The Westpac Stadium are filled with students from different Schools in Wellington Region. They are dancing and shouting the name "David Beckham" others bring big banners saying, "NZ love Beckham".

As of now, over 29,000 seats have sold for tomorrow exhibition match between LA Galaxy and Wellington Phoenix and organisers need to sell 31,000 to break the existing record for crowd attendance at a New Zealand football match. So hope to see you tomorrow ,7pm at Westpac Stadium.
