Huawei Australia today announced that it would host a National Digital Inclusion Summit in an effort to ensure no-one gets left behind in Australia’s burgeoning digital economy.
To be held on August 17th at Parliament House, Canberra, the National Digital Inclusion Summit will be hosted by Dr Tim Williams, author of the report Connecting Communities: The impact of broadband on communities in the UK and its implications for Australia, with Communications Minister Senator Stephen Conroy and Shadow Minister Malcolm Turnbull confirmed as speakers at the event.
“One of the key findings of Connecting Communities was that Australia needs to build not just a network, but a networked nation,” said Huawei Australia Corporate and Public Affairs Director Jeremy Mitchell. “This summit aims to do just that, by bringing together community sector groups with both government and the private sector to ensure that no-one gets left behind in Australia’s digital economy.”
The event was first announced in February to act on a key recommendation of Connecting Communities, with the aim of increasing digital engagement for rural and remote communities, the elderly, indigenous communities, migrant communities, and many others who would benefit from increased inclusion in the digital economy. Huawei is working with industry partner the AIIA (Australian Information Industry Association), community partner Community Sector Banking, and Webcast partner Viocorp to host the event.
When the Federal Government recently unveiled its #au20 National Digital Economy Strategy, it set 8 goals for Australia’s Digital Economy by 2020. One clear goal is to make Australia’s not-for-profit and community sector organisations rank in the top 5 OECD countries utilising broadband to drive growth and engage users. With this is mind, the National Digital Inclusion Summit has invited representatives from a wide range of community sector organisations to share their views and best-practice examples of engaging users online.
Registration for the National Digital Inclusion Summit is available online at http://huawei.com.au/event-registration.html. Webcast registration is also available. The full Connecting Communities report can be downloaded from www.huawei.com.au/connectingcommunities
