The Most entertainment and amazing Show I ever watched in TSB Arena in Wellington.
I’m lucky enough to attend the 10th Brancott Estate World of WearbleArt last night to cover a Filipino Designer for GMA Network .
The Show is two hours of wall-to-wall colour, energy and creativity, in a stunning choreographed performance featuring the full company of Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) dancers, professional dancers from Wellington’s Footnote Dance and the entire first year of the New Zealand School of Dance and a surprised appearance of ChristChurch Mayor Bob Parker.
Thank you to our friends from Wellington City Council Ms. Becky Egerton and WoW media Co-ordinator Tanya Beswick for the once and the lifetime exeperience.
A good mix of experienced Brancott Estate World of WearableArt™ (WOW®) Awards Show designers and first time entrants across New Zealand and the world, take out awards at yesterday prestigious WOW® Awards Show, with the Brancott Estate Supreme WOW® Award going to London-based designer and saddler Mary Wing To.
WOW® founder and co-judge Suzie Moncrieff announced yesterday that London based desinger Mary Wing To’s design Hylonome won the Brancott Estate Supreme WOW® Award and First prize in the Tourism New Zealand Avant Garde Section.
“Hylonome is a phenomenal representation of the beautiful mythological female centaur,” says Moncrieff. “The garment is a labour in leather and of love, showing Mary’s multiple skills as a fashion designer turned saddler.
“She has used various leather crafting techniques; the entire garment is hand-crafted and hand-laced together, using 200 metres of leather lace,” she says. “Even the horse’s head is hand moulded in leather. It is absolutely beautiful close up, from afar, and in performance!”Moncrieff said.
Marjolein van der Wal is an artist and fashion designer from Amsterdam has been awarded the Runner Up to the Supreme Award. This year, she entered her first ever WOW® entry, Hide In My Bone Shadow, into the Geni -i Creative Excellence Section: Under The Microscope. She says the design is built up out of organised bone-like shapes, and it functions like exoskeletons in insects.
“I am also pleased that so many first time entrants have done so well in this year’s awards, showing there is a depth of new talent continually coming through WOW®,” Moncrieff added.
Moncrieff notes that the 12 international winning garments are mostly from the United States (six) and the United Kingdom (four). There was also an award winner from Canada and one from the Netherlands – both of whom were first time entrants.
For our Filipino Designer, Mr. Michael Joseph Bawar, who is from Valenzuela City, has been selected for his Garment design entry “Silver Belle” (above picture) under the category : Tourism Avant Garde Section.
“I’ve been working on this piece for quite some time. The inspiration for the piece came from variety of sources ranging from medieval armory, superheroes to the artist Christo”, Mr. Bawar said.
He was chosen from the 72 international garment designs entered to participate from countries all over the World. A total of 55 garment designs, representing nine countries have been selected.
“Congratulations to all winners,” she says. “We are very proud that this year’s show is of such high quality, in terms of both designs and performance.”
Thirty five awards were presented at Brancott Estate WOW® Awards Show in Wellington, as well as seven highly recommended acknowledgements.
Every night, show goers are also treated to cameo appearances by celebrity guests – true New Zealand icons – during the Air New Zealand Kiwi Icons section.
