Trade with the Wind

The    Darwin    Waterfront    is    transformed    by    a    mesmerising   technicolour world   of    dance-­‐theatre and light  art    projection.

The  closing    weekend    of    the    Festival    has    some    extra   special    sparkle    in   store    with    dance-­‐theatre    company   Polytoxic’s    Trade    Winds    at    the    Darwin   Waterfront   Recreation    Lagoon,    a   free    walking-­‐on-­‐ water  spectacular   that   will   illuminate    the    already-­‐stunning    local    sunsets   nightly    from    22-­‐25    August.

Enter  the    enchanting    technicolour    world    of    Polytoxic,   where   the    traditions   of    the    Pacific    collide    with    the  trappings    of popular    culture.

This    stunning   collaboration    between    the    innovative    and   imaginative    team   from    dance-­‐theatre    company,    Polytoxic,   and    one    of    Australia’s    most   exciting    contemporary  Pacific   Island    visual    artists,    Samuel    Tupou,    is    a   magical    event   for    the    whole    family.    This    is    an    event    Darwin    will    not   want    to    miss.

Two performers    literally    dance    on    the    water    and    as    they   move    they   become    giant    screens    illuminated    by    a    world   of    exquisite    animated   projections.    The    two    majestic   figures    serenely    move,    creating    an    evocative   performance   installation    depicting    the    journey    of    two    women    from   different   cultures.

Their    movements    are    drawn    from    traditionally-­‐inspired   and   ritualised   gestures    and    their    visual    world    changes    and   grows    as    they    travel    from   one    land    to    another    –    from one    of    muted    tones    to    a    bright    pop-­‐aesthetic.

Surrounding  the    figures    float    origami    boats    carrying   messages    and    stories   of    the    hopes    and    dreams    of   the   audience,    created    in    a    series    of   pre-­‐show    workshops.

The    result    is    breathtakingly    beautiful    and    a    unique   Festival    experience    for    all    ages.

Formed  in    2000    by    Lisa    Fa’alafi    and    Efeso    Fa’anana   and    joined    by   Leah   Shelton    in    2002,    Polytoxic    fuses   traditional    Polynesian,    contemporary    and   street    dance   styles    with    a    strong    comedy    element    to    entertain   audiences   and    illustrate    the    cultural    reality    of    the    South   Pacific.

A    company   created    by    and    featuring    Queensland    and   Pacific    Island    artists,    Polytoxic   has    a    well-­‐ earned reputation    for    creating    multimedia    works    that    push   the   boundaries    of    performance    and    innovation.
