For the Tenth Anniversary and dubbed as New Zealand Largest Street Party , Cuba Street Carnival will be held on February 21,2009.
The Cuba Street Carnival will transforms the streets of inner city Wellington, including Cuba Street and Courtenay Place into an urban explosion of epic proportions with music ,art installations, roving performers, unique kids entertainment , food and artisan markets.
The highlight is the spectacular Meridian Illuminated Night Parade, making its flamboyant and spirited journey from Courtenay Place through to Cuba Street. Expect fantastic floats, dazzling dancers, astounding performers, sparkles, music, and many strange and memorable sights – an award-winning cultural event unlike any other. The euphoric atmosphere continues long into the night, with a massive batucada drum-off in the streets, and dancing, entertainment and revelry on every corner.
The first Cuba St Carnival on 21st Feb 1999 celebrated the distinctive artistic culture of Wellington’s most loved street with an audience of 15,000. The spectacular growth in popularity over 10 years now sees the event attract national and international interest, and audiences of 150,000, while keeping the eccentricity of Cuba St at its core.
